The Peaceful Gray Koala

Koji, a gray koala, is perhaps the most serene and adored resident of the zoo. Spending most of his time nestled in the branches of a specially designed eucalyptus tree, Koji embodies relaxation. With his fluffy ears and calm demeanor, he’s a living example of tranquility, drawing countless visitors who marvel at his ability to sleep up to 18 hours a day.

Koji’s journey to the zoo was part of an international program to protect koalas, whose populations are declining due to habitat loss and climate change. His keepers ensure he has a constant supply of fresh eucalyptus leaves, which form the majority of his diet. While he seems to spend most of his time dozing, Koji does have his active moments, especially in the early morning when he can be seen climbing or munching on his favorite leaves.

What surprises many visitors is Koji’s vocalization. Though he’s usually quiet, he occasionally emits deep, resonant sounds that seem surprising for such a gentle creature. His story is a powerful reminder of the fragility of Australia’s ecosystems and the importance of protecting koalas and their habitats.
