The Graceful Bengal Vulture
Arjun, a Bengal vulture with an impressive wingspan of nearly three meters, soars majestically in the zoo’s aviary. His arrival at the zoo marked the beginning of an inspiring story. Found injured in the wild, Arjun was rescued and brought to the zoo for rehabilitation. His right wing had been severely damaged, leaving him unable to return to the skies of his native Bengal plains.
Despite his challenges, Arjun adapted to his new life. His habitat is designed to mimic the rocky cliffs and open grasslands where Bengal vultures naturally thrive. Each morning, he perches atop the highest point of his enclosure, spreading his wings to soak in the sunlight. Visitors are often captivated by his regal presence, especially during feeding sessions when he demonstrates his natural scavenging instincts.
Arjun’s story serves as a reminder of the vital role vultures play in maintaining ecological balance. These birds are nature’s cleanup crew, preventing the spread of diseases by feeding on carcasses. Through Arjun, the zoo educates visitors about the alarming decline of vulture populations due to poisoning and habitat destruction. His resilience and survival are a testament to the importance of conservation efforts and the role zoos play in giving animals a second chance.
